Ingredients
  

Custard Layer
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large egg yolks
Berry Layer
  • 2 cups mixed berries strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar for macerating berries
Cake Layer
  • 2 cups sponge cake cut into cubes
Whipped Cream
  • 1 cup heavy cream chilled
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Prepare Custard
  1. In a saucepan, whisk together milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool.
Macerate Berries
  1. In a bowl, combine mixed berries and granulated sugar. Let sit for about 10 minutes to release juices.
Whip Cream
  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
Assemble Trifle
  1. In a trifle bowl, layer half of the sponge cake, followed by half of the custard, half of the macerated berries, and half of the whipped cream. Repeat the layers.
  2. Top with additional berries and a dollop of whipped cream. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Notes

For best results, use fresh, seasonal berries. You can also substitute store-bought custard if desired.
