  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk and egg (if using).
  4. Mix until a dough forms, being careful not to overwork it.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  2. Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf with a knife.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  5. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
